House of Fun: Andrew Maxwell

Andrew Maxwell returns to axis. Maxwell recently won the Channel 4 reality show 'Kings of Comedy' – the prize being a pilot show with Endemol/ Channel 4 which is currently in production. Renowned for his sharp, fast paced streams of consciousness and well observed retort, Maxwell builds the crowd by challenging the controversial or taboo. He engages any audience he faces with a myriad of subjects and lures them into his riotous world.
 



Violetta

Violetta comes to axis as part of a world tour to promote her new album ‘Unconditional Love’, a dynamic and emotional mix of soul and jazz, played by world-class musicians. From the Grammy-selected Jaume Vilaseca on piano, to the partnering of two of London’s most exciting back line players, Joseph ‘The Duke’ Roberts (Eric Clapton, Sting) and Cheryl Alleyne (Courtney Pine), Violetta has gathered around her something of a super-group that can deliver a show not to be missed.
 



The Lost Field: Racoon/The Exit Wound

Meridian’s double bill combines two one act plays dealing with families sundered and
re-united in bizarre circumstances.
 
‘Raccoon’, by Thomas Hall, tells the story of Saoirse who is offered the chance to re-
construct her past and her future as a result of a chance encounter in the café where she works.
 
‘The Exit Wound’, by Johnny Hanrahan, creates an intense ritual of return for an
errant trad singer/storyteller who has been on the run from his wife and children for over forty years.



Salute the Servant a farce by Walter Macken 

5th May 2009 to 9th May 2009
Translated from the Irish ‘An Cailin Aimsire Abu’, this farce was first performed in Taibhdhearc na Gaillimhe in September 1943. Holding Court are proud to present it’s first ever English production in axis.

‘5 Nights’ tells the harrowing yet uplifting true story of an Irish college student who heads off to live the American Dream on the back of a student J1 Visa. Working and playing hard until one day, on a South Boston building site, a lightning bolt shot through his body, catapulting him into the air.

The Pictures: La Vie en Rose

With over 160 members, ‘The Pictures’ is more than just a film club, it has become a great social network for the over 55’s in Ballymun and surrounding areas. ‘The Pictures’ takes place in our 211 seater theatre, so you can enjoy the big screen in comfort. Showing a wide variety of films, from classics to modern, there is something for everyone. This month's members pick is 'La Vie en Rose'.

Ballymun’s own monthly comedy club, ‘The House of Fun’, brings you the cream of the Irish comedy circuit and the very best new talent. Continuing to bring in the big names, ‘The House of Fun’ has secured well known comedia Colin Murphy for April. Colin is the premier Northern Irish comedian working today. His distinct fusion of edgy ‘in your face’ topical satire, with off beat, but acute observational material, make him a highly original and much sought after performer. With his work on RTE’s ‘The Panel’ and ‘The Blizzard of Odd’, he the rising star of the Irish comedy circuit.

The Evolution of Lauren Begaun

Powerful and evocative, this one-woman show directed by Kate Cotter of the BBC is not to be missed. One day, one scene, one unforgettable act of violence, this one woman show is black, hilarious and intense. Lauren devoted her life to her demented mother, until she found her dark side. Describing her sell-out show from the Dublin Fringe Festival ’08, as a twisted comedy about psychosis, vegetables and the search for freedom, Clodagh Downing has the inspirational qualities that will make this a memorable lunch-hour.
 



Celebrate Top of the Pops 

1st April 2009 to 4th April 2009
‘Celebrate Top of the Pops’ is the 4th grand variety performance in axis. It features residents and professionals involved in community work in the Ballymun area. Over 100 people are involved both front and back stage and it is the largest team building exercise, bringing together insiders and outsiders in a way that you’ve never seen them before.

Chronicles of Broadway 

25th March 2009 to 28th March 2009
Through world wars and cold wars, depression and recession, moon races, court cases and oil crises, the bright lights of Manhattan’s theatre district has provided its own soundtrack for the 20th century. ‘Chronicles of Broadway’ reels back the years with a line-up of musical showstoppers from such favourites as Andrew Lloyd Webber, Rogers & Hammerstein, Sondheim and Menken, and takes a look at the events throughout the 20th century that produced these theatrical giants.
 



House of Fun: PJ Gallagher

Ballymun’s own monthly comedy club, ‘The House of Fun’, brings you the cream of the Irish comedy circuit and the very best new talent. Bringing the second installment of laughter this season is PJ Gallagher. Best known as the hilarious and sometimes outrageous Jake Stevens from RTE's Naked Camera, and Makin' Jake.
